USC ISI Takes Center Stage at LA Tech Week
USC Viterbi Information Sciences Institute (ISI) is excited to announce its participation in LA Tech Week, taking place from October 14-18, 2024. Located in the heart of Silicon Beach in Marina del Rey, California, ISI — a University of Southern California (USC) research institute and world leader in the development of advanced information processing, computer and communications technologies — invites innovators, entrepreneurs, and tech enthusiasts to a series of events throughout the week.

What’s Happening at ISI During LA Tech Week?
- Free Coworking Spaces (October 14-18) Need a productive and collaborative environment to work during Tech Week? ISI is offering free coworking spaces all week long. Located in a tech hub, our state-of-the-art facilities will be available for those who wish to work in the heart of Silicon Beach, surrounded by fellow innovators and forward-thinking professionals. - AI Panels (October 14 & 17) We’re bringing together thought leaders in artificial intelligence for two panels that explore the latest trends, challenges and opportunities in AI. These panels will dive deep into the future of AI, offering insights into how it’s transforming industries and our everyday lives. Whether you’re an AI expert or simply curious, these discussions will provide valuable perspectives on the impact of AI technologies.

Hosts: Craig Knoblock, Keston executive director of the USC Information Sciences Institute and vice-dean of engineering at USC and Yolanda Gil, senior director of AI and data science strategy and fellow at ISI.
This panel will include representatives from:
=> Language Weaver. Funded in 2002 to commercialize automated machine translation and acquired by the largest human translation company for $42.5M and continues to flourish today. Panelists are Kevin Knight, an academic and entrepreneur, and co-founder of Language Weaver and a researcher at USC/ISI for 26 years; Daniel Marcu, VP of artificial general intelligence at Amazon, and co-founder of Language Weaver and a researcher at USC/ISI for 20 years; Bryce Benjamin, a successful angel entrepreneur and founding CEO and chairman of Language Weaver.
=> Second Spectrum. What began as ISI research in 2012, Second Spectrum uses data science and AI techniques to analyze sports data about players and teams, and was acquired in 2021 by Genius Sports for $200M. Yu-Han Chan is chief operating officer and the co-founder of Second Spectrum and was a researcher and research assistant professor at USC/ISI for 8 years.

Hosts: Craig Knoblock, Keston executive director of the USC Information Sciences Institute and Vice-Dean of Engineering at USC, and Adam Russell, director of the artificial intelligence division at ISI and host of the AI/nsiders podcast.
This panel will include: Kristina Lerman, principal scientist at ISI and research professor in computer science, who is widely recognized for her research on network science and its applications in social networks. Jonathan May, research lead at ISI and research associate professor in computer science, who has been building language models in industry and academia for over two decades. Yolanda Gil, senior director of AI and data science strategy and fellow at ISI, who has been recognized for her interdisciplinary work on AI for climate, neuroscience and health. Karl Jacob, a serial entrepreneur and investor who started his career as a student at ISI, has advised or been a board member at several companies including Facebook, Dimension X, Keen and Cloudmark, and now serves on the USC Viterbi School of Engineering’s Board of Councilors.
- ISI will also offer exclusive lab tours on October 16. Participants will have the opportunity to explore cutting-edge research in quantum computing, space technology, and cybersecurity. Led by ISI’s top scientists and engineers, these tours will provide an inside look at groundbreaking projects shaping the future of these fields.
