Prostate brachytherapy dosimetry with dual modality imaging

Abstract

Purpose/Objective: Objective of this study is to demonstrate the feasibility of performing post-implant and intra-operative dosimetry for prostate brachytherapy using fluoroscopy and transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) data.
Materials/Methods: Prostate brachytherapy is commonly performed under visual guidance of TRUS and fluoroscopy. These imaging modalities are also capable of providing in real time data necessary to calculate dose distribution relative to prostate volume. Fluoroscopy provides the radioactive seed coordinates while TRUS permits delineation of prostate boundary. Fusion of two data sets can realize post-implant or intraoperative dosimetry. We have developed a fluoroscopy based seed localizer which performs image acquisition, spatial distortion correction introducedby image intensifier, 2D seed detection, and 3D reconstruction of seed coordinates (1, 2).
