Guidelines for tunability and reconfigurability of an integrated optical tapped delay line filter based on nonlinear wave mixing
Abstract
We numerically investigate the tunability and reconfigurability of a heterogeneously integrated optical tapped delay line (OTDL) finite-impulse-response (FIR) filter based on nonlinear wave mixing. The architecture uses two lithium-niobateon-insulator (LNOI) periodically poled lithium niobate (PPLN) waveguides for multicasting and coherent multiplexing and a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) chirped and apodized waveguide Bragg grating (CAWBG) for wavelength-dependent tap delays. The PPLN waveguides and CAWBG are modeled in MATLAB using parameters obtained from Lumerical simulations. We study the magnitude responses of 3-to 9-tap OTDL FIR filters and show that increasing the number of taps improves the approximation to a Butterworth target; the 9-tap OTDL achieves a spectral response with a 26.5-dB stopband attenuation and a 0.88-dB root-mean-square error (RMSE) relative to the target.
