Bio

Michael Pazzani is a Principal Scientist at the Information Sciences Institute at the University of Southern California.  Dr. Pazzani was the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development at the University of California, Riverside where he was also a professor of computer science with additional appointments in statistics and psychology.  From 2006-2012 he was the Vice President for Research and Economic Development at Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, where he was also a Distinguished Professor of Computer Science. Prior to his appointment at Rutgers, Dr. Pazzani was the Director of the Information and Intelligent Systems Division at the National Science Foundation. In addition, Dr. Pazzani coordinated NSF's homeland security research. He also served as a member of the Board of Regents of the National Library of Medicine at the National Institutes of Health from 2003- 2005. In 2019, Dr. Pazzani was appointed to the Defense Science Board.  Dr. Pazzani started his career as an assistant, associate, and full professor of Information and Computer Science at the University of California, Irvine.

Research Summary

Dr. Pazzani has published over 150 papers on machine learning, explainable artificial intelligence, knowledge discovery from databases, personalization, internet search, and recommendation systems.  He serves on the Editorial Board of Machine Learning. He is a Fellow of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence. In 2014, a paper Dr. Pazzani and his students authored in 1996 was selected as the AAAI classic paper award. Dr. Pazzani's research has been funded by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, DARPA, AFOSR, ARO, and several companies.
