Sandia’s Heterogeneously Integrated Photonics Platform

Over the past several decades, Sandia National Labs has developed advanced integrated photonic platforms which span multiple material systems and provide control of the full wavelength spectrum from UV to SWIR. These developments have occurred within the Microelectronics Engineering, Science and Applications (MESA) facility, which includes both a CMOS fabrication line and a compound semiconductor fabrication line. Utilizing heterogeneous integration, we have been able to leverage both facilities to develop state of the art photonic devices targeting applications in RF processing, LIDAR, high bandwidth optical communication, quantum information, sensing and more. In this talk I will give a broad overview of Sandia’s fabrication and heterogenous integration capabilities and go into depth on recent successful collaborations with industry and academia in the areas of RF photonics and quantum information.
Speaker Bio
Michael Gehl is a Principal Member of Technical Staff with over 15 years’ experience, 29 publications and 13 patents in the field of quantum optics and integrated photonics. At Sandia, he is a lead researcher developing innovative integrated photonic devices and platforms for applications in RF signal process, cryogenic interconnects, quantum information and sensing. He is currently the quantum photonics thrust lead on a large internally funded effort, developing integrated photonic technologies for optical quantum computing with frequency encoded qubits. Additionally, over the past 6 years, he has developed a low loss visible photonic platform, spanning 320nm to 1762nm wavelengths for interfacing to trapped ions and neutral atoms.This program is open to
