Yolanda Gil Appointed to National Science Board

In October 2024, Yolanda Gil, Principal Scientist, ISI Fellow, and Senior Director for Strategic Initiatives in AI and Data Science at USC’s Information Sciences Institute (ISI), was appointed by President Biden to the National Science Board (NSB). The NSB is a prestigious body of only 25 members responsible for governing the National Science Foundation (NSF) and advising both the President and Congress on science and technology policy.
The NSB plays a critical role in setting NSF’s strategic direction, overseeing its budget, and addressing national issues related to research and education. Gil’s appointment reflects her profound impact on AI-driven scientific discovery, semantic workflows, knowledge capture, and data provenance. She has led numerous national and international initiatives, including co-chairing the U.S. 20-Year AI Research Roadmap, and has been instrumental in developing web standards for trust and transparency.
Her work has had a lasting influence on AI and science policy. As a member of the National Science Board, Gil will contribute to shaping the future of science policy, guiding the direction of the NSF, and advising the President and Congress on critical matters related to science and technology.
With her extensive expertise, Gil continues to lead advancements in computing technology and AI research. She also serves as the Director of the Center for AI Research in Health, and as Director for AI and Data Science Initiatives at ISI, and in the Viterbi School of Engineering at USC. Additionally, she holds the positions of Research Professor in Computer Science and Spatial Sciences.
