Combining Workstations and Supercomputers to Support Metacomputing Applications: The Parallel Tomography Experience

Abstract

Resource-intensive parallel applications are typically developed to target either workstation clusters or parallel supercomputers. In this paper, we describe a strategy that leverages the advantages of both types of platforms to improve the performance of a parallel tomography application. We demonstrate that this strategy promotes superior application performance compared to strategies which target the application either to parallel supercomputers or workstation clusters alone.
