Is night time the right time? Psychological well-being in day versus night shift nurses

Abstract

The work of nurses is often associated with elevated stress, anxiety, and negative affect, all of which may impact the quality of patient care. These psychological states coupled with irregular work hours can contribute to negative health outcomes for nurses themselves. This paper explores the differences of physiological responses, negative psychological states and health conditions between day shift nurses and night shift nurses by using wearable sensors and mobile technologies. We collect physiological data, mobile phone usage data, and self-report survey data from approximately 110 nurses for ten weeks. We observe that night shift nurses exhibit more physiological difficulties and negative mental states in general. In particular, night shift nurses suffered sustained adverse psychological effect outside workplace, which may associated with phone usage, sleep deprivation and sedentary behaviors.
