Does Pd-103 Prostate Brachytherapy Lead to High Rates of Urinary Retention and Morbidity?

Abstract

Results
One hundred forty patients were treated with Pd-103 and 67 with I-125. For Pd-103, the mean intra-operative volume and V150 were 30.3 cc and 72%, respectively; corresponding values for I-125, were 38.3 cc and 59%. For Pd, mean post-operative volume, V100, V150, and rectal V100 were 31.4 cc, 95.7%, 72%, and 0.39 cc, respectively; corresponding values for I-125 were 36.4 cc, 96.5%, 69%, and 0.84 cc. Two of the iodine cases (3.0%) and nine Pd cases (6.5%) experienced acute urinary retention requiring temporary replacement of the Foley catheter during the one month post-operative period (p= ns). No patient experienced urinary retention beyond one month. The mean baseline, 1 month and 12 month AUA (and QOL) scores for Pd were 8.5 (2.1), 19.7 (3.5), and 8.2 (1.7), respectively; for I-125, the values were 7.4 (1.6), 17.1 (3.1), and 13.4 (2.6). Differences between Pd and I were statistically …
