Electro Encephalogram Signals and Cognition
Abstract
Advances in sensing, imaging, signal processing and machine learning are allowing mapping human brain-behaviour connections in real world settings that were not imaginable even a few years ago especially inspired by applications of societal relevance in health, education. Speech provides a rich platform for investigating and highlighting critical neuro, cognitive, and behavioral links, given its centrality in communication. Speech from thought and planning to its execution is compositionally organized. Phrases are then organised as a sequence of words, which are organised as sequence of syllables, which are organised as a sequence of phones. It is conjectured that delta oscillations in the electroencephalogram signal correspond to phrases, theta oscillations to syllables, and beta-gamma oscillations correspond to phonemes. The mapping of speech centers in the brain could be useful for patients suffering from seizures when a surgical intervention is planned. Ultimately, the objective is to build low cost silent speech interfaces.
This book is the result of collaborations over the years across various Institutions, both international and Indian, on the analysis of EEG signals. Although initially most EEG work relied on multiple trials, today it is possible to control systems using brain signals, especially for persons with speech disability. EEG signals can be transformed into speech signals for the speechchallenged. The useof multimodal signals in the analysisof is also animportantfactor in EEG processing.
