AI in geosciences: progress, challenges, and opportunities.

Abstract

" Computer! Half volume!" The android asked. The year was 1987 and the second installment of Gene Roddenberry's saga painted a bright future for mankind that inspired generations. In this universe, one can talk to a computer in casual conversation. Apple's Siri, Amazon's Alexa, and Google Assistant represent baby steps towards the full service of the Enterprise. While Alexa can turn on my favorite show from my favorite streaming service and Siri can find me a vegetarian restaurant within half a mile of my present location, neither of these assistants can run complete scientific workflows and deliver the scientific results in a meaningful way. If I ask Siri to find me data on Holocene sea surface temperatures and run spectral analysis, it would not-too-helpfully redirect me to a web search.
