Abstract

This report gives an overview of how data science and big data technologies are portrayed in the popular press. The report begins with an overview of the benefits of data science in a variety of technical fields, including natural and environmental sciences, medicine and health, government, social sciences, law enforcement, and industry. It also discusses the broader impact of this research for society. The report also discusses the broader concerns with data science, including threats to privacy and the importance of rigorous methodology for data analysis.
